Lift Up Your Eyes

John 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
These words were spoken by the Lord Jesus.  The context of any passage in Scripture is very important.  The woman who had five husbands and not married to the current man she was with had just received the Lord.  With the excitement of meeting the Messiah she ran home and told everyone “Come see a man which told me all things that ever I did.”  The people of her home town then left the city to find Jesus, and sat with Him to learn.  It was during the time that the woman had left Jesus to inform her city of Him that HE spake the above words to His disciples.
There is plenty of evidence to support the idea that in Palestine there were four months between the planting and harvest time of wheat and barley.  Some even suggest that the time frame of the words and activity occurring in this portion of Scripture was actually during the harvest time.  The Lord is a master at using earthly events to teach the spiritual.  Obviously the harvest the Lord is referring to is the harvest of souls.  And the reason he says Say not ye there are four months, and then cometh the harvest is so that first of all we would not put any amount of time between one hearing the gospel and believing it, and secondly because there was rapidly approaching many people from one woman’s city who were about to be harvested into God’s Kingdom.  John 4:39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman………..  John 4:41 And many more believed because of his own word.  So very clearly the Lord is revealing to His disciples that souls are ready now to receive the good news.  Jesus reached one, and harvested many more through the one.
How do God’s people become participants in God’s great harvest?  The answer is found in the verse at the top of this page.  Jesus said LIFT UP YOUR EYES.  The writer of this devotional is not so opposed to technology as to ban it entirely.  One cannot help to notice that many are constantly looking downward at their phones; which often distract the Christian from seeing the need people have for the gospel.  Truly technology cannot be blamed.  To LIFT UP YOUR EYES is not entirely the act of using the eyeballs, but also of having a heart that understands the number one need of people.  So many are hurting, lonely, worried and afraid.  They are ready right now to receive the Lord and to be forgiven of their sins.  Truly the field, the world, is white already to harvest.  Who will be a reaper?
